Hi, I'm Alp Ünlü.
Physics student at Koç University and researcher in a biophysics lab. I build the tools science runs on: microscope software, lab hardware and simulations.
Recent projects

Repairing a Multiphoton Laser
The piezos in our lab's Coherent multiphoton laser stopped working. I found the broken chip and replaced it.

Reviving a Laser Microfabrication Station
The stages of our laser microfabrication station stopped responding. I moved it to a new controller and brought it back to life.

FPGA Noise Cancellation
An FPGA board turned into a DSP lab I can run from anywhere, with active noise cancellation that removes 50 dB of noise.
From the lab

Spiral Waves
Rotating spiral waves like those of the Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction, simulated in COMSOL and in Python.

Arrested Phase Separation in C. elegans
Why groups of worms stop growing and settle into a regular pattern, seen from both the crowd and the individual.

Crack Formation
Simulating how cracks open around the rim of a growing colony, in COMSOL and in a solver I wrote myself.
Physics, code and things that move
I am an undergraduate physics student at Koç University, working in the biophysics laboratory of Assistant Professor Aşkın Kocabaş. My work there ranges from building robots and controllers with Arduino and ESP boards to running simulations in COMSOL and Python.
More and more of what I do is software: a microscope control and analysis app for the lab, an AI tool that helps grade exams, a file converter and a mobile game. Outside the lab, I play on my university's ice hockey team.
I started this site to learn new things and to share what I have learned along the way.
