Repairing a Multiphoton Laser: Tracing a fault down to one chip
The piezos in our lab's Coherent multiphoton laser stopped working. I found the broken chip and replaced it.
Our lab's multiphoton microscope runs on a Coherent Chameleon laser. It stopped working properly because the piezos inside the laser were no longer being driven, and without them the laser cannot hold its operating state.
I took the control board out, photographed both sides and stitched the photos into high-resolution scans so I could follow the traces. All four piezo outputs read about −3 V instead of the roughly +80 V they should supply, which pointed to a part shared by all four channels rather than four separate failures.
Following the circuit back, I identified the faulty part myself: the LM324AM op-amp that feeds all four high-voltage amplifier inputs. I removed it with a hot-air gun and soldered a new LM324AM in its place, and the piezos work again.
